I can hear the whimpers in Elvie’s breath, though the thudding of my heartbeat is close to drowning her out. Even though there is a massive concrete wall between us, I can still pick out her voice. A few nights ago she told me that her mum said she would come and get her, and take her outside the walls. If Rem has a plan to give her daughter a better life than this, is there anything I can do to help?

“Lunch time, Tag,” Dailee commands, though the authority is back in her voice I can still hear a shade of guilt.

“I have to take my bucket down to the store room.” I hold the bucket in my good hand, the brush clatters across the floor.

“Leave it,” she orders. “You,” Dailee collars another Tag, “take this stuff to the store room for emptying and putting away.

“Sir,” the Tag nods.

I look at my hand, the palm is swollen and the fingers a dark shade of red.

“Let me see,” Dailee requests.

I could feel no more pain than I do now, so handing it over is not a worry. She could cut each finger off and it would be an improvement.

“You really should get this checked.”

“No point,” I wince, drawing it back to my chest. “It was my fault.”

“Your choice. Go and get lunch then rest your hand.”

“I have to be here all day,” I protest.

“I’ll file it as an accident. Cleymen will understand.”

If this was Du Plessis, I would disobey his request in a heartbeat. He is constantly trying to trick us into a beating. Dailee, I don’t know her motives, but still I can’t risk it.

“I really have to finish my job,” I say definitively. I try to walk away, but she blocks my path with the butt of her Stinger.

“It’s an order, Tag. You already have one day at The Rotary, let’s not make it another.”

“Fine,” I give in.

“Leave that way, and go back to your House. The less that anyone sees of you the better I think at this point in time.”

I snort to myself and leave in the direction Dailee points. If she was that bothered about Elvie getting in more trouble, than she would have stopped Hastley from beating her in the first place. Who am I kidding? No one, not even the officers, have any real power.

The alarms ring out around the zone. All Tags going for lunch now start to leave their jobs and make their way to the house. I simply slip in with the mass and make my way back. I’m glad not to be walking alone, although I’m not talking to anyone just exchanging smiles in the form of a greeting, it takes my mind off the pain.

It’s no use, even back home queuing for lunch the pain is taking over. I struggle to take my tray. Roya is still on food duty, she takes one look at my hand and smiles openly. I just about manage to carry the gruel to the table before my cup topples to the floor.
